We were all worried about saying cusses, because she has a kid and maybe she's a mom about cusses, but then we found out that when she heard us ask if it was ok to say cusses she yelled out "fuck yeah" from the back of the room. That's pretty cool. She said a lot of cusses in between her songs too.

We haven't updated this in a while. Sorry! We're still a band, to the extent that we've ever been a "band." You should come see us soon! We're playing some shows: Feb 11th at the Waypost with Your Rival and Feb 29th (LEAP DAY!) at Kelly's Olympian. We're not sure who that second show will be with, but we promise it'll be a lot of fun. His intention, the statement said, was to sell the crushed bones to a group of teenagers who play in an Portland emo-pop group called Typhoon. The bones, which are believed to contain pure, uncut evil, have become the drug of choice for young liberals who wish to gain from the overarching power of Republican lawmakers while maintaining their liberal views towards gay marriage and gun control.

“Whenever the political season arises, we see a spike in the use of Repub,” said Portland Police Chief Johnny Law. “But now that the primaries have been pushed forward and candidates seem to spend all their time campaigning rather than attending to their duties as put forth in the Constitution of the United States, well, Repub usage is a constant. It’s an epidemic. Or a pandemic. Or something.”

Where, exactly, Moral procured his powdery payload is not yet known. Although, based on his history, police suspect that he and his partner in crime, Casey Moral, may have been behind a series of recent grave robberies in Salem, where the two were known to unearth Oregon state legislators in the mid-‘90s.

After being apprehended by Salem police in October of 1996, the two swore off the practice and adopted a straight edge policy towards their political lives. They avoided prison time, in exchange for apologies granted to the families of the deceased, a bublic flogging and lifetime probation. Still, rumors persisted that the two had only stopped the practice because they had been selling low-quality Repub.

“I’m not going to confirm that,” Ben Moral told the Weekly Standard in September 1998. “But I will tell you that the street price for low-level state politicians really wasn’t worth the risk. You get a better high sniffing Nancy Reagan’s bra.”

Immediately after the arrest, police searched Moral’s apartment. Amongst various sex toys and a large collection of Beenie Babies, they found a notebook that contained a blueprint to the mausoleum where Rev. Jerry Fallwell’s corpse will be layed to rest later this week. Police said the book also contained names of various of Moral’s cohorts and that the plans were found under the heading “Motherload Mutherfuckers.”

The Morals Get Pumped!

Before every show, Ben and I like to watch this inspirational video footage from our favorite Spanish member of the Portland Trail Blazers:

We encourage you to do the same.

BREAKING: Mortals album title plagiarized

PORTLAND -- Local music fans and gamers alike were stunned early Tuesday morning by damning evidence of plagiarism posted on the blogosphere. According to preliminary reports, avid role-players and feared rock and roll band The Mortals stole the title of their newly released album (entitled The Warming Light of Dawn) from an online interactive role-playing game set in the Lord of the Rings universe.

Here is the passage from the game which sparked the controversy:

The young knight glances around him, as the rising sun begins to thaw the shadows of night. "Mournful, like the White City itself."

Now Thorondur nods in agreement, allowing the warming light of dawn to cast his face and form in its scarlet-limned brilliance. "Yet for the White City there yet remains hope," he says firmly. "So long as Faramir lives, at least. Boromir, too, is a mighty man, but 'tis Denethor's second son I love better."

The Mortals now find themselves in a firestorm of controversy.

"It's just not right," said Chad "Elfstalker" Bunson (Level 16 Orcish Rogue) spokesperson for the League Of Secondary Education Roleplayers, a college gaming group, "there are conventions regarding intellectual property rights in gaming circles, and this goes against all of them. It really exposes these guys for the frauds they are, trying to piggy-back on the success of gaming by pretending to be something they're not."

But many gamers weren't as quick to persecute The Mortals for what some view as a breach of gaming ethics.

"It doesn't really matter, you know?" opined Marty "Thornock" Blaustein (Level 13 Dwarf Priest, pictured above), "The important thing is that their music rocks and that they play by the second edition ruleset."

Viva Atahualpa!

Argentinian folk singer Atahualpa Yupanqui is what I listen to before sleep a lot of nights. It's on an upstart label called Hanfed, run by our friend Aaron, who recorded it and plays all the drums as well as some other stuff. It features appearances by Brian Mumford of Dragging an Ox Through Water and Mike Barnhill from the Courtesy Clerks and Self Run Will. We know Brian from Eugene, and he self-released and hand-stitched our first real release, If You Want to Find True Love, You Must Learn to Hold Your Tongue on his Publishersclearinghaus label. That was the last thing we did, which was like three years ago. This album has taken forever, mostly because it was our first time making a real album and Hanfed's first album, too." Casey also says, "I think it would be a good album for people who are getting over a breakup or a dead pet or something. This show will be our first show ever with a full band. Our first drummer was Eric (Tractor Operator) Jensen, and he's going to do some singing with us at this show. We're a really sing-along-y band. Oh, and the album was designed by Adam Grano from Fantagraphics. He designed the last Joe Sacco book, But I Like It! I think it was called, and a lot of other stuff that they've put out." Now, while I should say I've only had their record for about an hour, it's already won me over. The Warming Light of Dawn has a nice, sincere, no bullshit/irony/over-artsy vibe about it. The switch off between fuzzy, tough little indie-Americana rockers and the acoustic tracks feels natural, like the right thing for that perfect little moment. On the second track, Casey sings, "Words don't mean a goddamn thing," but one of my favorite things about the album is the attention put into the lyrics, in the messages and stories, little details that make the songs sound a million times better than any vague, love-love-me-do crap. Strangely enough, I've never heard, or even heard of, John Itkin. The song is brilliant, though, and so I headed over to his website to see what was up.

This is what was up:

Unless I Get Drafted

A paean to I-5 and the strange life some of us have carved out in a few different places with a stretch of highway in the middle. Even a verse dedicated to the worn out debit cards so many of us hump around in our back pocket:

If you can't get it to work the first few times through. Just cover it in plastic and swipe it again. And if it still won't work, just call me over. I found your a-music to be very pleasing to me, and I think you should come North Korea and play in very special military band. Though, for sure that if you stay in U.S., you will really BLOW UP bigtime. You'll fly all over the place, for performance of course. But the stressity of fame sometimes can lead to implosion, or in this case, EXPLOSION! Hahahaha! But I am joking to you. Come to North Korea please for long time. You have one week for packing and saying goodbye to friend and family. FOREVER! Or for just long time.
P.S. I have included photo for you very special feature that I like: 'Morals Fan-weekly Favorite Fan!' I am clapping for your special music, as is entire North Korea army (not pictured)! This time is special because it's a release party for Steve Laffler's new graphic novel, 40-Hour-Man, which he recently released on with his own Manx imprint. I'm still tryna get my hands on the book, so I can't tell you about it quite yet, but I've seen some of Laffler's other work and I'm pretty stoked on it.

It's also a special show because my friend Adam Grano, yeah the same Adam Grano who made some fliers for us and whatnot, has a band called the Rheas, and they are also playing the show. (The preceeding sentence, in addition to being a grammatical minefield, is not, strictly speaking, true.)

But, really, anything the Christian Coalition and MoveOn agree on is too crazy not to mention here.

Those of you who are tech-savvy (MumFORD!) already know this, but for the rest of you, listen up:

The big cable and telecom companies (read: AT&T, Comcast, etc), which have become the only ISPs in the market any more, want to be able to charge content providers for access to their customers. This would mean a huge company like Microsoft could buy access and would load at the speeds you are used to. Other content providers who can't or won't pony up -- news services like IMC, awesome web comix like Questionable Content, small businesses like Made Electric, or even web sites you absolutely cannot live without like craigslist, and yes, even pr0n -- will be relegated to a sort of e-ghetto of slow loading and poor connections. We cannot allow this to happen.

One of the things that has made the internet the (mostly) beautiful, democratic, and lively place that it is is the levelness of the playing field. With a bit of work, I can make a web page that looks just as good, or better, than, say Oregon Representative Greg Walden (incidentally, a major asshole who voted against Net Neutrality TWICE). I can register a domain name (like, say, www.gregwaldenisatotaldouche.com) for a few bucks and host my site for free or cheap hundreds of places. Or, now, I can host it from my home computer. The only difference, as things stand, between my page and Greg (douchebag) Walden's is contextual -- his page is, at first at least, more deeply embedded in the web as a whole. Other people link to his website, and thus it appears higher on search sites.

Letting the telecom companies take over would ruin democracy on the internet, and commodify what is becoming, sadly, the last bastion of truly free speech.

Don't let this happen

MoveOn has a Petition (which is probably largely ineffective), and a link to call your congresspeople (which is hella effective)

Also, we're putting this badge
on this page. Well, the Lord's name is Conrad (he works at Berbati's Pan), and the Morals are playing with Roy on June 12th. The list of bands Roy has toured with is a who's who of Morals influences and loves: "The Weakerthans, Constantines, Onelinedrawing, Decibully, Okkervil River, and Rocky Votolato." Better yet, Roy themselves fucking rule! They are un-googleable, but i found their website: www.roytheband.org. Check this, though, for a bio and mp3s: Roy's label website complete with mp3s.
These guys have a similar story to us, they played/play in louder rock bands (ex members of botch/harkonen, current member of these arms are snakes) and now they play sad, country-inspired heart-rock.
Monday, June 12th. Berbati's Pan. With Some By Sea (also awesome). "We wanted to approach a project like that, but we also wanted to add a little more depth."
After some deep-soul-searching, the Morals decided on "The Universe Series," wherein they will record a single for every planet in the universe, starting with the first single, "Sing me a (nep)Tune," scheduled for release in June.
"It's high-time," Ben Moral says "for a project like this. We were going to wait for Steven Hawking to die, you know, to make the releases timely. But then we thought 'dude- it's the universe, and we are totally floating in it.'"
Critics have warn that the series will be humanly impossible to finish.
"The observable universe alone contains about 5 × 10(To the 22nd Power) stars," says Mitch Fieldler of MIT. "Organized in about 140 billion galaxies. It is fucking unfathomable that two people could accomplish this project in their lifetime."
The Morals remain undaunted. "That's what they told the Who while they were writing 'Tommy,'" Casey Moral says. "It's just record-industry talking heads trying to keep down independent music, and we're really sick of it."
The Morals say they see infinite possibilities for their universe project. The fact that they would even attempt such a feat speaks to the stellar ability of man to make a big bang and expand the definition of what is and isn't possible. That, the band says, is truly "far out."

FEATURED FAN OF THE WEEK!

 natesass
Originally uploaded by caseymoral.
Nathan L. is this week's "Morals Fan of the Week"TM. It's a gem in the acoustic duo's live set, which consists of guitarist Ben Hubbird/"Moral" banging away at his acoustic guitar while WW contributor Casey Jarman/"Moral" (no relation) paces around with the mic, half-screaming, half-singing into the audience members' faces. But I now have a new favorite Morals song to belt out at their live shows. It's called "Artists Wear Black," and it's a cry-in-your-milk emo-folk tune about wanting the object of your affection to sing ya a drunkass karaoke song at Chopsticks before you (presumably) make out over fried rice. The Morals music is sincere; it's relatable; it's got heart, great lyrics and killer harmonizing; and it's to be released for your listening pleasure on their first full-length, due out in a couple of months. Ben sat down amongst all the gear and began strumming his acoustic. Big Casey stood next to him and sang along too, smiling his big-hearted smile as the packed in crowd clapped along and hooted. I stood in the back and was baffled by how well two fellows and an acoustic guitar could so captivated an audience. To be perfectly honest, it defied my expectations as to what could fill and inspire a room of that size. I figured you pretty much needed boxes and boxes of knobs and wires and keyboards that rattle genitals with bass, maybe three or four back-up singers/dancers and a few outfit changes while, in fact, one only needs to write and sing a good song that makes people feel happy and feel like there's other people out there that feel like they do."

--Nathan Langston of The Maybe Happening

morals at food hole

 morals flyer
Originally uploaded by caseymoral.
You gotta come see this shit. it's all ages, too. It's that perfect mix of tuneful and cracked, almost raspy, but not. While Casey does his thing, homeboy Ben Moral plays guitar, sings a little, and helps weave folk structure, harmonica ronks, and acoustic guitar into fine, catchy, respectable pop. "Everybody's going to want to hold your hand and make love to you, but don't let it go to your head, shake it off and instead, find the truest heart you can find, it might not be mine."
